What exactly is THCA?
THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in raw hemp plants. Think of it as the parent molecule or "precursor" to THC. In its natural, unheated state, it has a different molecular structure from THC and is not psychoactive.
So, will THCA get me "high"?

- When it is heated (smoked, vaped, cooked): Yes. When you apply heat, a process called decarboxylation occurs. This process removes a part of the molecule, instantly converting THCA into Delta-9 THC, the compound known for its psychoactive effects.
If you smoke or vape a THCA product, you should expect the same effects as traditional Delta-9 THC.
How is THCA legal?
This is based on the 2018 Federal Farm Bill. This bill legalized hemp and hemp-derived products that contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Since THCA is not Delta-9 THC in its raw form, products can be rich in THCA while remaining below the legal Delta-9 THC limit.
Will I fail a drug test if I use THCA?
Critical WarningAlmost certainly, yes. Most standard drug tests do not screen for THCA; they screen for THC metabolites. When you heat THCA, it becomes THC. Your body will process it as THC, and it will be detected on a drug test.
Even with raw, unheated THCA, there is a risk of false positives or that trace amounts of THC could accumulate in your system. If you are subject to any form of drug testing, we strongly advise you to avoid all THCA products.
